Today, small waves.

I have been surfing since I was a youngster. Firstly with a surf board, after that I started to surf with free style kayaks, but I missed something...After surfing with my Mega kayak surf, the world became different...Ohhh my Neutron RV remember me when I was on my surf board...

But surfing with a sea kayak is another story...a bigger boat, more difficult to handle, much more! Moreover in a kayak your body is more expose to an injury than in a surf board...but if we are in a sea kayak, the probability increase exponentially...too much length and volume.

Otherwise, we have some benefits in a sea kayak, we can travel all arround the coast seeking for a solitary spot. Besides, if the waves are to small for others surfers we can make head or tail of them...and always we have the posibility of a crossing. 

The only problem  comes when we have to face big waves...in that case we have to be very carefull  with others...if your tecnique is not enough, maybe you must play in the foam...

By the way kayakers who want to practise surf, must learn the surf rules to avoid problems with other surfers, and they  must realise that a sea kayak is not a handle boat in the wave. So make sure you have enough room an there is no surfer in your wave trajectory.

He surfeado desde que era pequeño.  Primero con una tabla de surf, y tras eso comencé con kayaks de rodeo, pero perdia algo...Después de surfear con mi Mega kayak surf, el mundo cambió...Ohhh mi Neutron RV me recuerda cuando surfeaba con tabla...

Pero surfear con un kayak de mar es otra historia...un barco más grande, más dificil de manejar, ¡Mucho más!  Además en un kayak tu cuerpo está más expuesto a lesionarse que en una tabla...pero si estás en un kayak de mar, la probabilidad se multiplica exponencialmente...demasiada eslora y volumen.

Por otro lado, en un kayak de mar, tenemos algunos beneficios, podemos viajar a lo largo de la costa en busca de una rompiente solitaria. Además si las olas son demasiado pequeñas para otros surfistas, podemos apañarnoslas...y siempre tenemos la posibilidad de hacer una travesia.

El único problema viene cuando tenemos que afrontar grandes olas...en ese caso tenemos que ser muy cuidadosos con otros y si tu técnica no es suficiente, quizás debas de jugar en la espuma.

Por cierto, los kayakistas que quieran jugar en las olas, deben aprender las reglas del surf para evitar problemas con otros surfistas, y daros cuenta que un kayak de mar no es muy manejable en la ola. Así que aseguraros que teneis espacio suficiente y que no hay surfistas en vuestra trayectoria.

Thre long years without using my old Ysak...It has been resting, waiting for me in Asturias.
The coast of Asturias is awesome, part of the clifts arem made from limestone, so you can guess that Asturias is a fantastic place for Rock gardenning. This mornning I launched in Salinas Beach, a famous surf spot and paddled a small route along his coast. The Cantabrian Sea is a rough one, so you have to be an expert paddler. Sometimes you will find a flatwater sea, but you must be prepare for the worst scene. The  light, is our best friend, I like to navigate gazing at the light changes... Firts of all, you must to know that the spanish marine law prohibits the night navigation for kayaks, you only can paddler the lapse of time between  one hour after  dawn and one our before sunset.
So if you paddle in these circunstances, you are an outlaw...Sometimes you haven´t planned it sometimes you have planned  it.

If you want to experience the changing lights,  I recommend you to paddle before dawn, so if things go wrong you know for sure that the sun light is comming.  Of course you will have to carry a flashlight with you, just in case you need it to make you visible if a ship is close to you. It´s important to be prepared, you will improve your night skills with this kind of practise. Better safe than sorry!


Another tip, you should chose a calm day,with good visibility, without big swell, fog or winds. When we lost our day light references, it,s incredible how fast you can be confuse in a well known area. Be prepare and look at your nautical chart for the lighthouses, buoys, onshore  buildings or anchored ships...

For the vast majority of people, Asturias is a gorgeus place, for me is my home, the rest of the warrior.
I feel fortunate to return  home every holiday...although these last two years I´ve been far away.

Yesterday I was chatting with one of my flatwater kayak training mates, Alvaro. One of the issues we were talking to was that  kayaking is one of the few sports you can practice alone or in a small group. In a city as Madrid and subburns, where live almost 6 million people and mountaneiring sports like ski are crowded. Maybe that´s one of the reasons because I quit climbing, skiing and mountaneiring in general.


Para la gran mayoría de la gente, Asturias es un lugar precioso, para mi es mi casa, el descanso del guerrero.
Me siento afortunado de regresar a casa en vacaciones...aunque estos dos últimos años he estado lejos.

Ayer,  estuve hablando con Alvaro, uno de mis compañeros de entrenamiento de aguas tranquilas. Uno de los temas de los que hablamos fue que el piraguismo es uno de los pocos deportes que tu puedes practicar solo o en grupo reducido. En una ciudad como Madrid y sus alrredores, donde viven casi 6 millones de personas y los  deportes de montaña como el ski están masificados. Quizás esa sea una de las razones por las que dejé la escalada, el esqui (travesía y fondo) y el montañismo en general.

On the other hand I practice kayaking in most of their modalities: flatwater k1, white water, kayaksurfing and seakayaking. Kayaking filled the adventures gaps, becaming a way to feel nature, to be close contact with her.

The coast of Asturias in my opinion is the most beatiful coastal landscape I´ve ever  kayaking. Perhaps because is a wild coast in most of their places. This video refers to Oleiros bay, it was a windy day but I found shelter in the east side of it near "Ratón Island". I launched and landed in Sant Peter Beach, who is very close to the firts one.

Por otro lado, practico la mayoría de las modalidades del piraguismo. El kayak ha ocupado mis huecos de aventuras, convirtiéndose en  un modo de sentir la naturaleza y estar en contacto próximo con ella.

La costa de Asturias en mi opinión posee el más hermoso  paisaje costero que jamás he navegado. Quizás porque gran parte de sus lugares son aún salvajes.

Este video pertenece a la ensenada de Oleiros, fue un día ventoso, pero encontré refugioen su lado Este, cerca del islote ratón. Embarqué y desembarqué en la playa de San Pedro, la cual está próxima a la primera.

Bueno, este video corresponde a una salida hace ya tiempo en mi Asturias, el día soleado y la mar en calma, me hicieron poner rumbo a la playa de San Pedro, pero nada más embarcar, el viento comenzóa a levantarse y a soplar con fuerza 4/5 aunque las imágenes no captan fidedignamente el estado de la mar, pero de un mar tranquilo, pasé a tener un oleaje más que divertido...ya en el interior de la ensenada de Oleiros, la cosa se tranquilizó un poco, pero una vez salías del abrigo de los cabos, la cosa se volvía a poner rockanrolera... entre tanto y tanto...una lubina fue la picada del día, y tras la foto de rigor, fué devuelta al agua, a seguir creciendo y cumpliendo su ciclo.

Oleiros es una playa bastante solitaria, con bastante gradiente en sus orillas, lo que hace que suela estar bastante batida por el oleaje y por tanto el desembarco no suele ser siempre posible...al menos en seco, y cuando uno no quiere mojar los carretes hay que aguantarse y quedarse en el agua...jejeje
